Exporting explainers

An explainer can leave Scrimba as an ordinary video file. Export it once and you get an MP4 of the whole lesson, slides and narration together, ready to upload to YouTube, a course platform, or anywhere else that takes video.

Exporting the video

Open an explainer you own, right-click it, and choose Export video. The render runs on Scrimba's servers, and the explainer page shows its progress while it works. It takes roughly as long as the explainer runs, sometimes a little longer.

You don't have to wait on the page. When the render finishes, Scrimba emails you a link, and the menu gains two new items:

• Download video saves the MP4, at 2560×1440 and 60 frames per second.
• Download captions saves the narration as a separate captions file (.vtt), for platforms that ask for captions on their own.

The captions are also inside the MP4 as a subtitle track, so players that support subtitles can switch them on without the separate file.

If the explainer is still generating, the menu offers Export video when ready instead. The export queues and starts by itself once generation finishes.

You can also export and download from an explainer's tile on your overview, without opening it.

Before you export

The explainer must be public or unlisted. The renderer opens it by its link, so a private explainer can't be exported. Change its visibility first.

The same rule applies to the file afterwards: set the explainer back to private and the download goes offline with it.

Playlists can't be exported as a single video yet.

After you edit

A downloaded video is a snapshot. Editing the explainer, for example by redoing a slide, retires the exported video, because it would no longer match. The download items disappear from the menu, and you export again to get the new version.

If you edit while a render is still running, you don't need to do anything: the render restarts on the edited explainer.
