Plans and pricing
Your plan sets how many explainers you can add to your account, whether you create them on Scrimba or claim them from a tool that made them elsewhere. Watching explainers is free and unlimited either way.
Free accounts
A free account gets five explainers. It's a one-off allowance for the life of the account, not a monthly one, so it doesn't renew.
Pro
Pro raises that to 100 explainers a month, renewing at the start of each monthly period. Pro also includes:
- Unlimited edits.
- Unlimited video exports.
- Switching off the Explain watermark on your explainers.
- Commercial use of the explainers you make.
- Every Scrimba course.

What counts
Both ways of getting an explainer draw on the same allowance:
- Creating one on Scrimba, on scrimba.com/explain or from inside a scrim.
- Asking a follow-up or going deeper, since each of those makes a brand-new explainer of its own.
- Claiming one that a connected tool made for you. See Privacy, claiming and sharing.
Once an explainer is in your account, watching it, sharing it and regenerating its narration cost nothing further. Two things have a limit of their own on a free account:
- Editing: three edits per explainer. After that, the edit box offers the Pro upgrade. The limit follows the creator's plan, whoever makes the edit.
- Exporting video: one explainer. Exporting the same explainer again, for example after an edit, doesn't count. At the second explainer, Download offers the Pro upgrade.
On Pro, both are unlimited.
Unclaimed explainers from a connected tool are free
An explainer made through ChatGPT or Codex, Claude Code, the MCP server or the agent plugin and CI endpoint starts unclaimed and counts against nobody's allowance. The connected tool writes the lesson itself. Scrimba generates the narration and pictures when somebody first watches it, claimed or not.
Only claiming counts. An agent can make you as many explainers as you like, and the five or the hundred is how many you can claim. If you've connected your Scrimba account in ChatGPT, each explainer is claimed for you the moment it's created, so it counts straight away.
Once a free account has used its five, the plugin still makes explainers, but unlisted and unclaimed, each with a claim link for later.
Watch later is separate
Adding an explainer to Watch later is a bookmark, not a copy. It doesn't put the explainer in your account and doesn't count towards your allowance, so the list can hold as many as you like.
Without an account
If you aren't signed in, you get one free explainer. It covers either creating one on scrimba.com/explain or claiming an unclaimed explainer, such as one made in ChatGPT, not both. After that, Scrimba asks you to sign in to create more.

Explaining a scrim always needs an account, so it doesn't use this free explainer.
